Viking Maps
I'll begin with a prayer. One that monks said with fervor for a few hundred years:
A fuore Normanorum libera nos, domine!
(O Lord, deliver us from the fury of the Norsemen!)
Amen. I am deeply impressed that they ventured down pretty much every river -- deep into the heart of the continent.
And see that litte arrow that continues on past Iceland?...
North America! Long before Columbus, and WAY faster than any old pilgrim.
Have you heard about the people that rebuilt a replica longboat and attempted to sail to to North America to prove that it could have been done? Apparently they made it there in 28 days!
Also, here's a picture of a typical viking settlement according to some expert. But where are the deadly cone breasts?
Viking Myths (not mythology, but untrue facts)
Feel free to add your own as you find them:
1. Horned Helmets. Apparently there is no evidence of vikings wearing horns on their helmets. Here is the only surviving viking helmet
2. Viking Armies were huge.
Viking armies were in the hundreds at most.
3. Vikings Fought and Pillaged 24-7.
Ill just quote the page i'm reading "Vikings peacefully colonised Iceland, Greenland and many smaller islands. As explorers they crossed the Atlantic and reached America 500 years before Columbus. As international merchants of their time, they also peacefully traded with almost every country of the then known world."
I never really thought of them as merchants.
my source on the above (not exactly an official source, but whatever)
